Cuckooz Curates: Museums at Night
Words by Bea Mustocea, Wednesday 17 May 2017

Don’t know what’s on this weekend? We do… Cuckooz Curates is a weekly blog dedicated to highlighting our picks of the best events happening in East London. We’ve done the groundwork so you don’t have to.

As all city-dwellers will tell you, we come alive at night. Free from the shackles of our 9-5, we venture outward in search of adventures and London will place them before you. Whether you’re a seasoned night owl or a fledgling in our city, summer marks the start of an exciting season of events the city over. Those with an appetite for discovery will be glad, like us, to learn about Museums at Night: a UK-wide festival of late night exhibitions, prompting some of London’s best galleries and museums to stage events after hours.

For those cultivating a refined taste, The National Gallery is offering a classical combination of a Calligraphy course, an immersion into Michelangelo, and an opening of the Renaissance exhibition ‘til late. Far from stiff and serious, however, an improvised comedy group, Blank Canvas will be there on-hand to ensure you get a giggle with your Giovanni.

This is Our London, happening this Friday at the Museum of London marks the start of the City Now City Future exhibition, a celebration of London’s diversity and a dissection of what living in a city of such vibrancy entails. This free event is an advance preview of the exhibition, which will showcase London-based artists in a night of performance, fashion, music and film, setting out to explore what the identity of a Londoner truly means. With a soundtrack curated by Reprezent Radio 107.3FM, a global market with food produced by migrant and refugee women, free barbering, zine making workshops and interactive installations by Blast Theory, you can join in the narrative and become part of the exhibition, too.

In case you’re in the market for something a tad out of the ordinary this weekend, our final recommendation would be The Geffrye Museum’s partnership with Background Bars - a showcase of London’s best gin, appropriately titled Let the Good Times Be-Gin! For the grand price of five whole British pounds, you’re invited to sample veritable feast of juniperry delights, including produce from some of London’s best and quirkiest distilleries.

Guests can expect to be formally educated on the production of gin, wooed by tales of those who succumbed to the infamous ‘mother’s ruin’, as well being provided with a thrilling (albeit sordid…) background on the historical roots of gin. Trading in a night at your local might also give you a little more bang for your buck - Gimlet Bar are giving an on site workshop, teaching the curious ones amongst you how to cultivate the nation’s most loved spirit at home. And, if you weren’t completely sold, (they had us at the word Gin), The Mead Men Shanty Band will be on hand to immerse you in participatory drinking songs. The Gyoza Guys, The Cheese Truck and Sloshed Sorbets will provide food for the evening, when the time inevitably comes to soak it all up!

Museums at Night is a bi-annual event taking place across the UK and London. Visit for more information.
