Cuckooz Curates: Love, Fame, Tragedy.
Words by Bryony Rosier, Friday 23 March 2018

Don’t know what’s on this weekend? We do… Cuckooz Curates is a weekly blog dedicated to highlighting our picks of the best events happening in East London. We’ve done the groundwork so you don’t have to.

Sex, passion, politics, deceit – just another day in the life of  Pablo Picasso. Unanimously renowned as one of the world’s most influential (if not greatest) artists of all time, this season, Tate Modern are showcasing their first ever, retrospective, solo show - featuring work from the artists most prolific and creative year; 1932. With over 100 paintings, sculptures, drawings, family portraits and personal letters, Love, Fame, Tragedy promises to show a rare and intimate glimpse into the personal life of the artist, his family and mistress of nearly a decade – Marie -Thérèse Walter.

An opening image of a woman stabbing a female rival with a dagger poetically foreshadows the theme of tragedy in Picasso’s work and indeed personal life. His work acts as a political precursor to the sociological effects of the Great Depression whilst simultaneously alluding to the artist own interpersonal struggles and resultant suffering of his romantic counterparts.

Love, Fame, Tragedy is a colourful and chaotic exploration of one of the most integral years of the artist’s life.  The show is running at Tate Modern until September 9th, but tickets are selling fast, so make sure to get yours while you can!
