Cuckooz Curates: Citadel Festival
Words by Bea Mustocea, Thursday 13 July 2017

Don’t know what’s on this weekend? We do… Cuckooz Curates is a weekly blog dedicated to highlighting our picks of the best events happening in East London. We’ve done the groundwork so you don’t have to.

Imagine the day of rest amplified to wipe previous nights of drinking. Imagine all the leisure activities you can dream of on your doorstep in a mid-July utopia. ‘The ultimate Summer Sunday’, as appropriately self-described, takes over Victoria Park this Sunday the 16th, replacing Lovebox’s days of raving with a festival a little out of the ordinary. Citadel comes to East London with a showcase of both musical wonders and a display of local talent. From families to ravers looking to restore their powers, we recommend traveling to Bethnal Green for the most idyllic experience on the UK festival scene yet.

With headliners like Foals, Bonobo or Laura Marling, Citadel announces itself to be tailor-made for the day of rest, avenging Sunday’s spot as the most undesirable day for a festival. The soundtrack is provided by some of the best live acts in the world, adequately selected to get you into that summer spirit. The many pop-up stages promise to cater to every taste with acoustic live sets inviting you to sing along in a set-up reminiscent of summer camps. But of course, what makes Citadel a standout is that this is only the beginning.

Galaxies of creative activities have been curated to provide the quintessential summer catalogue, the 2017 upgrades include a Spandex Stage with 80s Fitness, an exciting mix between vouging and yoga in the form of VOGA, zumba, disco diva cheerleading and many, many more surprises to be unlocked on the day. The arts and entertainment sections will intersect in the form of talks, debates and workshops. Do you want to go back to school? Chemistry for adults and the science camp can take you there. Do you want to engage into a multisensory exploration of attraction? Let Guerrilla Science guide your way.

Your art fix comes in the form of ‘get rich or tie dying’ or BKD’s messily creative Icing As Art workshop. The Sistas and the Insecurity Guards, ridding you of all your demons and setting your insecurities on fire, will police the bad vibes away, making sure everyone is having their best Sunday.

Foodies will also have something to look forward to, with London’s most beloved food pop-ups offering us the comfort food we need to recover in time for the working week. We recommend stopping at Patty&Bun and Mac to the Future, and, of course, the Gin and Tonic Bar! Very conveniently located a short’s bus ride away from our Shoreditch nests, we know where we’ll be ending the weekend.
