Cuckooz Curates: Valentines in London
Words by Bryony Rosier, Wednesday 12 February 2020

Why keep things traditional when you’ve got a City of culture at your feet? This Valentine’s, we’ve put together a list of our favourite alternative spots to celebrate this day of love (whether it’s for a partner, friend, or yourself!)

Hendrix Flat Party

Seeing as Valentine’s falls conveniently on a Friday this year, you might as well make the most of it. Rather than hitting up your local for a soul destroying singles night, why not try something a little out of the ordinary instead? This Friday, The Handel and Hendrix Museum in London’s West End are throwing an evening of lates and honestly, it looks awesome. Featuring live music, DJs, drinks, film projections and exclusive access to parts of the house usually closed to the public, members of the public are welcomed to party to the wee hours in Jimi Hendrix’s old apartment. The first floor will be by psychedelic DJ duo Ella Stormark & Acid Alex, followed by one of London’s best selectors, and NTS radio host, Donna Leake. The Meyer Dancers will also be joining the party, throwing some psychedelic dance moves into the mix. On the second floor, there will be a live set by Ese & The Vooduu People. South Londoner Ese Okorodudu and her band will bringing their Hendrix-inspired electric soul to Brook Street for a few stripped-back sessions throughout the night. If you fancy something a little more pared down, you can head to Jimi’s old bedroom, where live jam blues sessions will take place throughout the night.

PopHorror Anti Valentine’s Ball

Promoted as a ‘Cabaret for the Cold Hearted, this year The Vauxhall Tavern will be hosting a fabulous antidote to Valentine’s mush, in the form of a PopHorror Anti Valentine’s Ball. Expect to immerse yourself in such delights as speed hating, cliche corner, dating disasters, twisted tango and Aunt Agony PLUS Kooky versus Spooky in their Rom Com/Slasher Flick Smackdown and a competition to win their ultimate awkward dinner date…! Tickets are only £6 if you buy them in advance, or a tenner on the door - making for a cheap and cheerful alternative to the traditional three courses and a bottle of wine.

Valentine’s Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

If you like your Valentine’s full out corny and sickly sweet, try this Valentine’s Afternoon Tea Bus out for size…Enjoy a romantic tour on a vintage double decker bus, decked out with dainty finger sandwiches, cupcakes and cream cakes, and of course freshly baked scones with jam and cream. Soft drinks are included, but why not treat yourself to some bottomless fizz whilst you’re at it? After all, there’s a whole hour and a half of eye gazing to fill (though we’re sure the tour of London is just as titilating!)

Vaults Festival

If there are any thespians amongst you looking to get your fix, why not head to the Vaults Festival this Valentine’s and check out some cheap fringe theatre? Whilst tickets for bigger names are likely to sell out quickly, you can always play theatre roulette and take a chance on some lesser known performers for a fraction of the price. Afterwards, you can de brief at the on site bar or take a stroll through the famously graffitied Leake Street tunnel.
