Cuckooz Curates: Frieze Sculpture Park
Words by Jess Tauber, Monday 29 July 2019

After a long, tiring week at work, all anyone wants is an exciting weekend to take their minds off of the ominous following Monday. I’m here to shed light on distractions that will make the weekend feel permanent... You’ll thank me later.

If you want to embrace the summer sun but also view art pieces, the Frieze Sculpture Park is for you! Every year, Regent’s Park transforms into an art exhibit, presenting many exceptional sculptures by many exceptional artists. Let’s take a look at some of these unforgettable displays:

Fisk is known for using a sphere “as a device to reframe objects for [societies] consideration.” In this particular sculpture, Fisk is representing ordinary English architecture “as a painstakingly crafted icon.”

The famous Japanese toy My Melody, is transformed into a tall, all white sculpture, in order to display the “slight imperfections that illustrate the creative and manual process.”

This life-sized “1973 Jaguar E-Type Matchbox toy car” is used to represent the artist’s memories and how his childhood toy cars are no longer toys, but real desires.

This memorable piece is an example of Indiana’s “long-held fascination with the power of numbers.” He finds it captivating that a simple number can symbolize youth, maturity, and death (represented by the number 0).

Made from “carved cork and polystyrene highlights,” Bhabha’s interest in using everyday materials and transforming them into art represents the relation “between abstraction and figuration.”

These are only five examples of sculptures you can find near English Gardens in Regents Park. There are many more equally incredible pieces so definitely make sure to check it out!
