Cuckooz Curates: Paddy's Day, Martin Parr and Inside Bitch
Words by Bryony Rosier, Wednesday 31 December 1969

Don’t know what’s on this week? We do… Every other week we highlight the best your borough has to offer for a great few weeks ahead.

Headed for a mid-month slump? Shake it off with our chock-a-block schedule of events for the next couple of weeks.

St Patrick's Day

When it comes to throwing a party, the Irish know how it’s done. Each year, the streets of London become awash with Guinness, dancing, laughter and music as every Irishman and his dog unite to celebrate the annual festivities.

This year, a whopping 125,000 revellers are expected to head to Trafalgar Square for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, for everything from ceilidh dancing to folk shows to film festivals and more. If you’re feeling peckish (or wisely decide to line your stomach), you can head to the Irish Street Food Market and test the likes of The Pie Cart, Salt Beef Bros and Eat the Farm, who have all created a melange of tasty Irish eats for the occasion.

If you’re shy of the crowds and prefer to keep things a touch more local, head down to one of our favourite joints, The Glory in Hoxton for ‘Sodom and Begorrah’, a drag night more trashy than a plastic tiara. Join drag outfit ‘Glitter Hole’ for a dance off and singalong so fabulous you’ll sashay into the early hours.

Martin Parr @ National Portrait Gallery

One of our favourite, iconic British artists, Martin Parr has opened his latest exhibition ‘Only Human’ at the National Portrait Gallery, and it’s not one to miss. Documenting a series of photographs, collected since the referendum result in 2016, Parr captures the essence of ‘Brxitness’ in a collection of strange and wonderful images which are irrevocably,  quintessentially British.

Known for his salt of the earth, transparent, observational and often humorous photographs, ‘Only Human’ is a later retrospective of the artist’s work, conveying the diverse, gaudy, gimmicky, wonderful fabric of British society.

Inside Bitch @ Royal Court

Created by four phenomenal women emerging from the British penal system, Inside Bitch is a refreshing antidote to the glossy Hollywood prison dramas we’ve all come to know. Clean Break is a theatre company which has been working with past offenders since 1979, and their latest production has been widely lauded for it’s honest, funny and enlightening portrayal of female prisoners and the challenging clichés tv dramatizations perpetuate.
