Cuckooz Curates: Diane Arbus, Art 50 and Craft Beer Rising
Words by Bryony Rosier, Thursday 21 February 2019

Don’t know what’s on this week? We do… Every other week we highlight the best your borough has to offer for a great few weeks ahead.

The sun is shining, the days are getting longer and flowers are shooting up from the frosty earth. It’s finally springtime here in London and we’re ready to shake off hibernation mode and re-enter society at last! We’ve pushed ourselves to the brink of sanity watching endless crime documentary re-runs over the last 5 months (thank you, Netflix, it’s been emotional…) but thankfully this wonderful City is at hand to fill our days with gladness once more…

This week, we’ve put together our top pick of events worth leaving home for.

Barbican Open Fest: Art 50

Head to the Barbican this weekend and learn what it means to be British today. Exhibiting the work of (you guessed it) 50 British artists, both established and up-and-coming, Art 50 is a multimedia show exploring the subject of British identity in all it’s wonderous forms. Expect to see highlights of dance, photography, installation and film; including hip-hop dance group Boy Blue, Nitin Sawhney and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain – all for the grand total of 0 pounds and 0 pence. Head to level G of the Barbican this Saturday, 23rd February and get amongst! More info can be found here. Photo courtesy of the Boy Blue website.

Diane Arbus @ The Hayward Gallery

Diane Arbus rose to fame in the late 60s in New York for her black and white photographs which depicted people living on the fringes of society. Depicting everyone from children to circus performers, Arbus’s work is undeniably intimate, empathetic and human. In the Beginning is a solo show featuring over 100 photographs from the late artist’s collection, examining the formative years of her career. Head down to the Hayward Gallery this weekend, and after engaging in a spot of people watching of your own, along London’s famous riverside walkway, catch a tender glimpse of times past. Show runs until Monday 6th May. Tickets and more information available here. Photo courtesy of the artist.

Craft Beer Rising @ The Truman Brewery

Here’s one to bring in the weekend – Craft Beer Rising is back in town for a few days only, setting up shop at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. Head down and try out a mesmerising melange of beers and fine ales from over 175 international breweries. If drinking enough beer to put you in a coma wasn’t enough, the event also accommodates a jam-packed food hall filled with delicious street food, and even has a wee DJ booth, for when the time comes to bust out those dad dancing moves you’ve been holding in all week. Tickets and more info can be found here.
