Cuckooz Curates: Silver Screens, Brooklyn Feeds and ‘Spreads’ at Thaddeus Ropac
Words by Bryony Rosier, Wednesday 16 January 2019

Don’t know what’s on this week? We do… Every other week we highlight the best your borough has to offer for a great few weeks ahead.

Still counting down the weeks til summer? We’ve got a jam packed schedule of events over the next couple of weeks to help see you through those grey London days and learn a couple things along the way…

Collective Cinema @ St Margarets Church

Hanging on the coat tails of the ceaseless trend; screening movies in unconventional spaces, cinematic pop – up Collective Cinema are staging a screening of Moulin Rouge, complete with live music at St Margaret’s church in Lewisham.

Alongside a highly anticipated church organ rendition of ‘The Show Must Go On’, the pop-up venue is also serving a veritable feast of local craft ales, organic chocolate courtesy of Doisy & Dam, Chegworth Valley juices and more.

Robert Rauschenberg @ Thaddaeus Ropac

Undoubtedly one of my favourite artists of all time, the influence Rauschenberg has had on pop-art and conceptualism is without debate. This January, Thaddaeus Ropac gallery in Green park is curating a breath-taking show of the pioneering artist’s work, focusing on his ‘Spreads’ series (1975-83).

For those of you familiar with Rauschenberg’s work, you will be familiar with his boundary pushing, multi-media compositions, which blur the line between photography, painting and sculpture. His ‘Spreads’ series explores a narrative based oeuvre, detailing his best known motifs and materials. The largest artwork in this 12 piece collection is a staggering 6 metres wide and features a multitude of processes including the application of found objects and collage.

For anyone stuck in a creative rut, or simply looking to inject a little colour into their grey January, I strongly recommend checking out the show. Sometimes we just need a little change of perspective to shake things up.

Secret Urban Suppers – Brooklyn @ Secret Location

New to the city? We might just have the solution… Queue Secret Urban Suppers, London’s latest supper club venture where you can join other merry diners in top secret locations (released the week before) and test out food from some of the world’s most creative and interesting districts.

This week the theme is Brooklyn. Expect to sample the delights of a soda cocktail complete with Sweet ‘n’ Low rim (invented in the district), mini bagels with curry sauce, gourmet hot dogs and edible concert tickets. Each course tells a story of the neighbourhood – which we’re all over here at Cuckooz HQ. Gorge on, you beauties!
