Cuckooz Commends: Women of the World Festival
Words by Bryony Rosier, Tuesday 06 March 2018

Sharing is caring dear traveller; each week, a member of our knowledgeable team of locals shares their insider knowledge on what’s hot and happening in and around our nests.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the UK. With a lot of progress still to be made when it comes to women gaining true equality and in time with International Women’s Day on March 8th, Cuckooz have turned their eye to many of the exciting upcoming events happening around London which highlight some of the key issues at hand, and celebrate the recognised achievements of all the brave and inspirational women which have challenged the status quo and paved the way for a better future for us all.

This week we look forward to Women of the World Festival, a celebration of inspirational women across the world and a close inspection of many of the issues we face today preventing women from reaching their full potential.

Part of a global network of festivals, providing a platform for recognising rhe international achievements of women, Southbank Centre’s WOW explores the ways in which we can unite and change the world for good.

Bringing together pioneering artists, comedians, writers and politicians, multiple events will be taking place throughout the week to inspire and educate.

Our top picks of the week are:

Face of Defiance: A photographic portrait exhibition, placing the spotlight on survivors of female genital mutilation.

Women’s Quilt: A collaborative project commemorating women killed by their partner. An issue particularly heart breaking and prevalent, as we learned through our partnership with charity Refuge that 1 in women are victim to domestic violence, and devastatingly, two women are killed each week by their partner – in England and Wales alone.

Women in the Creative Industries Day: Join a community of individuals working within the creative industries as they discuss the reasons why gender inequality is still so prevalent within the sector and what can be done to eradicate on-going barriers to success, to ensure the workplace is more inclusive for everyone.

Event runs 7th-11th March 2018 at the Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX
