Don’t know what’s on this weekend? We do… Cuckooz Curates is a weekly blog dedicated to highlighting our picks of the best events happening in East London. We’ve done the groundwork so you don’t have to.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the UK. Yet we still have a long way to come when it comes to gaining equality. With 1 in 4 women experiencing domestic violence, more than half of girls and young women suffering controlling behaviour, abuse or harassment from men, an 18.4% pay gap in the UK and continued horrific practices such as female genital mutilation, forced marriage and human trafficking still rife in many parts of the world today, it’s more important than ever to share a message of support and solidarity in the cause for change.
This Sunday at 12pm, Care International are putting on the biggest March4Women to date, hosted by Sue Perkins and featuring a line up of music, entertainment and speeches by Sadiq Khan, Bianca Jagger, Helen Pakhurst, Shola Mos-Shogbamimu and Faeeza Vaid (and video address by none other than Annie Lennox!)
The march will commence at Old Palace Yard, Millbank and will continue to Trafalgar Square, where a live orchestral rendition of ‘You Don’t Own Me’ will be performed.
For those with a little spare time on their hands this Saturday, Well Street Market in Hackney will be hosting an ‘International Women’s Day Special’, featuring female traders and entrepreneurs, with stalls providing information on issues affecting women. Street food, fashion, locally sourced produce, jewellery, art and home accessories will be sold throughout the day from 10am-4pm, so head down early to avoid disappointment!
In the week running up to International Women’s Day, Cuckooz are putting on a promotion, which entitles female travellers to 18.4% discount on all properties when booked direct using the code IWD2018 at check-out, to highlight the UK gender pay gap. As always, Cuckooz continue to support the incredible charity Refuge, who help provide safety, assistance and emotional support to victims of domestic violence and their children.
