Cuckooz Curates: Tove Jansson @ Dulwich Picture Gallery
Words by Bryony Rosier, Tuesday 23 January 2018

Don’t know what’s on this weekend? We do… Cuckooz Curates is a weekly blog dedicated to highlighting our picks of the best events happening in East London. We’ve done the groundwork so you don’t have to.

For those who aren’t familiar with Jansson’s magical world of Moomins, the ongoing retrospective at Dulwich Picture Gallery will provide valuable insight into the life of the popular Finnish artist, author and creator of one of the most renowned children’s book characters of all time.

The exhibition is currently showcasing over 150 works including handpicked paintings, portraits and graphic illustrations never seen before in the UK, which span over her incredible 72 year career.

Raised in an artistic family, which encapsulated bohemian values, Tove was the daughter of Finnish sculptor Viktor Jansson and graphic designer and illustrator Signe Hamartsen-Jansson. Her two brothers went on to gain success as commercial artists; Per Olov Jansson a photographer and Larson Jansson a lesser known author and cartoonist. Tove spent much of her life inspired by her life partner Tuulikki Pietilä, with whom she collaborated on numerous projects throughout their time. The exhibition explores the prolific catalogue of work produced throughout the artist’s career, from which we can detect a running narrative between the characters of her storybooks and the real life inspirations taken from characters in her own life.

This weekend marks the close of the exhibition, so make sure to snap up your tickets soon to avoid disappointment!

Exhibition continues until 28th January 2018.

Tickets and more information can be found here.
