Words by Bryony Rosier, Tuesday 09 January 2018

Sharing is caring dear traveller; each week, a member of our knowledgeable team of locals shares their insider knowledge on what’s hot and happening in and around our nests.

With the upcoming annual London Short Film Festival just around the corner, Cuckooz presents our picks of the best events happening around our nests.

Now in its 15th year, LSFF represents the crème de la crème of cutting-edge UK independent film, supporting young creative talent.

1. LA REBELLION – Sat 13th January – Rio Cinema, Dalston.

Showcasing a selection of shorts created by American filmmakers of African descent emerging from the UCLA Film School in the 1960s, LA Rebellion focuses on the real lives of Black communities in the US during this time. Featuring the work of Bernard Nicolas, Zeinabu Davis and Charles Burnett amongst others.

2. NEW QUEER VISIONS: Don’t Look Back In Anger – Sat 13th January – Moth Club, Hackney.

An honest examination of the highs and lows, loves and losses, hopes and dreams of queer characters in 8 independent short films.

3. NEW SHORTS: A Winter’s Matinee of Romantic Films – Sun 14th Janurary – Rio Cinema, Dalston

Whether you’re amidst the throes of young passion, timeless love, abiding a fleeting encounter or suffering from gut-wrenching heartache, A Winter’s Matinee is sure to provide you with a sustenance of relatable content that draws from the universal experience of Love.

4. NEW SHORTS: Lost in Translation – Mon 15th January – Curzon, Soho

With our ever-increasing reliance on technology, on the surface, it appears we are more connected than ever. However, this series of shorts explores the onset of loneliness in a society where human interaction is becoming increasingly limited and relationships progressively fickle.

5. NEW SHORTS: Sketch Night and Live Comedy – Wed 17th January – Moth Club, Hackney

The ever-popular LSFF Sketch Night returns and promises a hilarious evening of shorts and live comedy featuring Ken Chung and Short & Curly. Prepare for an evening of silliness and make sure to book early to avoid disappointment!
