Cuckooz Curates: Geffrye Museum Closing Party
Words by Bryony Rosier, Thursday 04 January 2018

Don’t know what’s on this weekend? We do… Cuckooz Curates is a weekly blog dedicated to highlighting our picks of the best events happening in East London. We’ve done the groundwork so you don’t have to.

For those who have had the pleasure of staying in our quirky Hoxton apartments, you’ll be familiar with the beautiful 18th Century building and gardens which stand opposite; The Geffrye Museum.

Dating back to 1714 and formerly used as a museum to inspire and educate furniture traders in London’s East End,  the building has since evolved into a museum of the home - educating visitors in the thousands each year on the lifestyles of the bourgeoisie from the 1500s to present day. The beautifully restored almshouse has been reverted to its original condition, and offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of London’s poor and elderly during the 1700s.

In recent years, the museum has also become host to regular arts and crafts fairs, exhibitions and events. During the summertime, the rear gardens open to the public for open air events (and a follow-on pint at Beagle, opposite if you fancy…).

This weekend, however, The Geffrye Museum will be closing its doors for two years as part of a £18m restoration project.

To bid adieu, the museum is hosting a good old fashioned knees-up, promising live performances, crafts, cocktails and street food for all. For those interested in the future of the museum, Wright & Wright will be presenting an architectural discussion and plans for the future of the garden will be disclosed in the period gardens on Sunday.

To round off the weekend, a live finale performance will take place in the Hackney Showroom stage located in the café.

Event runs Saturday 6th – Sunday 7th January 2018.

Free Event. Visit here for more information.
