Cuckooz Commends: Walala X Play
Words by Bea Mustocea, Sunday 31 December 2017

Sharing is caring dear traveller; each week, a member of our knowledgeable team of locals shares their insider knowledge on what’s hot and happening in and around our nests.

Maybe you recognize the style from the tribal pop murals that have taken the street art world by storm.  Maybe you’ve encountered the infectious positivity of the designs on this festival season, or have stumbled upon the good vibes of the patterns on your travels to New York, Sydney or Paris. Or maybe the certain familiarity is owed to the interior of your own Cuckooz Hoxton nest. Whatever the case may be, Camille Walala has left her mark on the art world and her installation at NOW Gallery in the Greenwich Peninsula takes that one step further.

Walala x Play turns the designer’s instantly recognizable prints into an immersive and interactive experience in a maze-like setting riddled with optical illusions. Explorers are welcome to interact with the installation, being told of anomalies and asymmetries to look out for in a playful immersion that has proven popular with both children and adults alike. NOW Gallery has also commissioned Walala Studio to create two custom ping pong tables in the same vibrant tribal style, those looking to take their art field day further being encouraged to request a bat and ball from the reception.

The energy of her geometries acquires a new kind of physicality in this new format that aims to dissect the flow of space in this ‘temple of wonder’, sparking feelings of light disorientation which make for either a lovely family outing or for an impressive quirky spot that will impress your date. The labyrinthine setting is the closest you’ll get to stepping into Camille Walala’s interior universe of colours and, maybe we’re biased, but we’re sure you wouldn’t want to miss that. We promise you’ll get some good Instagrams out of it too.

If you’re feeling inspired by the interiors of your Hoxton apartments, then why not, engage with the designs even further by stepping into Camille Walala’s ‘temple of wonder’, free to all who want to see and play until the 24th of September.
